Claude vs ChatGPT: which should your team use?

Claude is strong at long documents, writing and Excel. ChatGPT has the most features. How to choose for your team, and which plans are safe for work.

Claude fits a team that works with long documents, contracts and spreadsheets, and wants careful writing. ChatGPT fits a team that wants writing, research, images and voice in the app most people already know. Both cost about the same for a business. On a business plan, neither one trains on your company's data.

Claude is strong at long documents and careful writing

Claude is made by Anthropic. Teams use it to read a long contract and pull out what matters. They also use it to draft letters and proposals, and to work through a spreadsheet. Claude works inside Excel as an add-in, so it can read and build formulas in the file you have open. More details.

Claude connects to Microsoft 365, so it can search your Outlook mail and calendar, Teams chats, and SharePoint and OneDrive files. On a business plan, the plan owner and a Microsoft admin switch this on first. More details.

ChatGPT does writing, research, images and voice in one app

ChatGPT is made by OpenAI, and it is the AI app most people have already tried. It writes, researches, makes images, and connects to apps such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack through plugins. More details.

When Claude is the better choice

  • The work is long documents. Contracts, tenders, reports and policies, read and summarised with the page each point came from.
  • The writing has to be right. Letters to clients, proposals and staff notices, where the tone matters.
  • Your team works in Excel. Claude in Excel works inside the file you have open.

When ChatGPT is the better choice

  • Your staff already use it. A familiar app means less training.
  • You need images or voice. ChatGPT does both in the same app.
  • You want one tool for many jobs. Writing, research, images and voice sit in one app.

Many teams use both

Some companies give most staff one tool and a few people the other. That works, as long as everyone uses a business plan with a work email, never a personal account. A one-page staff AI policy says which tool is for what.

Getting from personal AI to company AI takes 3 steps

You now know which assistant fits the way you work. Both tools help one person at a time. Neither one does a shared job across your company's systems on its own. If your company runs on Microsoft 365, read Copilot vs ChatGPT too.

  1. Personal AIOne person uses Copilot or Claude for their own emails, files and meetings.
  2. AI set up for the teamCompany accounts that keep data safe, a staff AI policy, training so everyone uses it the same way, and shared agents. See the hands-on workshop.
  3. AI that does a team's jobAn agent connected to your systems, such as Xero, WhatsApp or your stock system. It does a shared job and asks before it acts. See Glimmer.
Most companies stop at step 1, because someone has to do the setup for step 2.

Someone has to pick the plans, write the staff rules, train the team and connect AI to the company's systems. If nobody in your company has the time, Glints does that setup with you. Book a call about setup.
